Our Rug Smells Bad from Urine Odor

Rug Smells Worse after Steam Clean?

A customer asks.

We had some pee spots on our wool area rug, while house breaking our dog.

We rented a rug doctor steam cleaner and cleaned our rug, but now I can smell dog pee just sitting on the Sofa affront of the TV.

I can assure you we were very thorough in cleaning this rug; went over the area many times using over half a bottle of the cleaning solution, then ran just water several times to get up all remaining soap.

I can understand that it seems we have loosened and spread around the pee, but if doing a thorough job with a steam cleaner doesn't work, what else can I do?

Now I couldn't even spot treat since it is all over now. I would assume the pee is up, but the urine odor remains stronger.

There is no carpet pad under this rug which I know can be the problem with carpet.

This wool Oriental rug is only 8 months old, how can I save it?!

When cleaning, a rug from, dirt and soil, we can use the steam carpet cleaning machine because it is designed for it.

When we use the steam cleaning machine, on urine, we use the manufacturer's instructions; “apply 1 oz. Of shampoo in 1 gallon of Hot Water “to clean dirt and soil from syntactic rug is okay;

However to use hot water on the wool / urine is No No No (the hot water will react as a booster to wake the sleeping/Dry urine crystal), more you clean with soapy hot water the urine smell will be stronger.

Did you clean the middle of the rug? And the bottom of the rug where 80% of the urine laid??

When the dog urinated the urine goes from the top and travels all the way to the bottom of the Area rug leave a trail of urine crystals.

By shampooing the top of the rug the moisture will refresh the crystals that on/in the wool, and it will smell worse. Why????

The soap that we used to come with refreshing odor (Deodorizer, the woman loves a good smell, it sale faster) for example in this Shampoo the Deodorizer is Vanilla. So the Dog Pee Pee on the Wool rug we clean it with a Vanilla Deodorizer.

The combination of the Pee and Vanilla will become a new odor, we call it PeePeeVanilla.
